Many large organizations connect their network directly to the internet. They use communications technologies such as leased lines, or even satellites to connect their network to the internet backbone or to a primary network provider. The technologies that make the internet work, such as TCP/IP Routing, allow you to access other hosts on the internet through your network. You might access the internet via a proxy server, which provides access by communicating with other internet hosts on your computer’s behalf. Whereas normal LAN access to the internet requires every computer to have a unique address, proxy server access allows computer on the network to access the internet with a single internet address. This fact can represent significant savings to an organization and thus is quite a popular solution. When using a proxy server, you configure each client program to direct all of its communications to the server’s server; you configure each client program to direct all of its communications to the server’s address. Throughout this book, you learn how to configure different types of programs to use a proxy server. Alternatively, your organization might use a firewall to protect your network from intruders. In the case, you still have rather complete access to the internet. A firewall can work similarly to a proxy server, communicating with internet hosts on the behalf. PPP/SLIP Internet Access
You probably do not have the luxury of a physical connection to a network on the internet. You can still enjoy a direct connection to the internet by using a dial-up connection. A dial-up connection provides access to all hosts on the internet that’s equal to a physical connection. Dial-up access means that you use a modem to connect to an internet service provider’s network. Because the service provider has a physical connection to the internet, you have


access to the internet just as though you were physically connected



to it. Your connection works a bit slower, however, and it is temporary. To connect your computer to a internet service provider, you use one of two connection protocols called PP or SLIP. PPP stands from point-to-point protocol and SLIP stands for Serial Line Interface protocol. A connection protocol such as PPP lets your computer communicate with the service provider’s network computer so that your operating system thinks it is physically connected. The networking protocols that work on top of PPP, such as TCP/IP do not even realize that they are using a serial connection to the network instead of a plain old network adapter card. One drawback of a PPP connection to the internet that you actually have to be connected via a telephone line in order to use most internet service. Remember that your connection is only temporary. Yes you do things such as compose internet mail messages before you connect, but in order to view web page, you must have a live connection. The software that you use to connect to the internet provides PPP for you. In window 95, for example, dial-up Networking provides PPP. In window 3.1 programs such a Trumpet WinSock provide PPP.
